Links to Susan Sontag and Roland Barthes.
I think Chip Simone tried to demonstrate through his photographs, something that everyone will feel different about. Nobody will see the photograph and it's meaning in the same way. Kind of like Roland Barthes' "punctum". Something will capture your attention but that something will probably be different for somebody else.
I also think the kind of picture Simone takes, can represent the function of photography that Roland Barthes was talking about. For example, this picture provokes desire. |
Susan Sontag and Roland Barthes' Quotes
“Today everything exists to end in a photograph.”
|
"Photographs are a way of imprisoning reality..."
|
Roland Barthes' "Blind field".I think the blind field is something that is present in any photograph, but especially in Chip Simone's, because the picture are often of a building with no one in the frame, which makes us wonder where everyone is or what is happening outside of he picture's frame.
